3D printers have been out for a long while now. I've heard of it on the news, years back about the possibility of portable printing machine that anybody can buy and use for their own usage. Be it as a hobby or for commercial. It sound pretty interesting but back then it was still in the infancy.
Here's some info I've read on Wikipedia:
"For methods of applying a 2D and 3D image onto a 3D Build surface, see pad printing. For methods of copying 2D parallax stereograms that seem 3D to the eye, see lenticular printing and holography.
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to processes used to create a three-dimensional object in which layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object.
Objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and are produced using digital model data from a 3D model or another electronic data source such as an Additive Manufacturing File (AMF) file.
STL is one of the most common file types that 3D printers can read. Thus, unlike material removed from a stock in the conventional machining process, 3D printing or AM builds a three-dimensional object from computer-aided design (CAD) model or AMF file by successively adding material layer by layer.
The term "3D printing" originally referred to a process that deposits a binder material onto a powder bed with inkjet printheads layer by layer. More recently, the term is being used in popular vernacular to encompass a wider variety of additive manufacturing techniques. United States and global technical standards use the official term additive manufacturing for this broader sense.
ISO/ASTM52900-15 defines seven categories of AM processes within its meaning: binder jetting, directed energy deposition, material extrusion, material jetting, powder bed fusion, sheet lamination and vat photopolymerization."

Also, I manage to find this guy video about comparing the various 3D printer that are in the market now. He did a good job of showing us which one he prefers. Base on the quality of the output. If you're new to 3D printing like me and want to get up speed then watch his video. There are so many videos out there on 3D printing and if I'm interested in something, I'll spend some time checking up on some of them.
Once, a while I do heard of crazy things that you can create using 3D printer. Like creating a house, a car, weapons and even spaceship. I sometime wonder about the products that I bought that seems to be made by a 3D printing machine too. I also thought, I saw a 3D printer during visits to my local shops. They seem to be everywhere now.
I guess, 3D printing are becoming so much common nowadays. There are also varied cost for some of the 3D printing machine. Mostly bought by some entrepreneurial people with ideas for products. I wonder if they are taught in school science classes or courses provided for studying the technology of 3D printing.
Latest improvement on the 3D mobile printer have really help it go mainstream. I think, I've even seen a promotion for a 3D printing machine for kids!
