Fun Dabbling with Windows 10 Powershell & Powershell ISE!

So, if you have been reading my last few posts, I've been talking about my new 2 in 1 Windows 10 tablet pc. I bought it on the cheap as it got a low-end Atom processor and 2GB of ram. Normally, I won't even look at such tablets.

I decided to get this because I thought of installing Linux Ubuntu distro over it. Turn out, my external DVD writer USB 2.0 connection won't work. Well, I thought, maybe I'll just install WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux. Again, I couldn't do that because the tablet only has x86. Wtf!?

At least, I can install Thonny Python IDE. Simple and light software for me to use. I then became itchy to try out Visual Studio 2019 and it took almost 8GB of my meager 57GB of storage left from 64GB. I've already tried out Visual Studio Code. So, VS 2019 is something new for me to play with.

I can actually play with the Termux terminal available on my phone. Which, I already install Ubuntu 20. I can link my phone to my tablet pc and use it as if it's installed there. Since I'm using Samsung Note 10+, I can also connect via cable or wireless to Samsung Dex.

Hopefully, I'll have the money to get myself the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It's really a 2 in 1 powerful phablet that I can use as a Youtuber and Blogger on the go. Great camera for taking pictures and videos. Easy to edit with a bigger screen when you open it up.

I can also play with Linux and python on it without any problem. One can only dream. Anyway, back to my low-end tablet pc. It's not that bad. I'm actually surprised how smooth it runs. It does load things a little slow but it'll run without hiccups after that.

I purposely bought a cheap tablet pc because I wanted to install ubuntu over it. I didn't want to buy an expensive laptop or tablet just to test install ubuntu. In fact, seeing how smooth the Windows 10 run on my tablet, makes me have second thoughts.

I used it like I'm using my gaming PC and latest AMD Ryzen 7 laptop, opening up many browser tabs and playing games. Okay, it does start to overload. I check the task manager and the CPU was 100%. With only an Atom processor and 2GB of ram, it starts to groan like an old fart.

In any case, since, I couldn't install and play with WSL, I thought maybe I'll see what I can do with Windows 10 Powershell. I found out there's actually a Powershell ISE aka Integrated Scripting Environment app. It already comes with Windows. It's like Thonny, Python IDE.

Some of the things available on Powershell like the command are the same. Like 'ls' for the directory, 'cat' to look at files, etc. It doesn't have 'nano' or it does as I haven't check it out yet. You can actually install it. I discovered SCOOP(website) that will help you install apps like Cowsay or Figlet.

I learn a couple of new things like a different language to code using the ISE. There are communities out there already using Powershell and of course tutorials by Microsoft too. It's funny because, if I was able to install WSL, I won't have the interest to delve into the world of Microsoft Powershell.

I've been trying to make the Powershell be as homey as the Linux terminal. Having a fun app like cowsay does help. It helps that the Powershell been out for a while, and I've been searching for some interesting thing to do with my newfound interest in my new tablet pc.

I hope they make the Powershell as good as the Linux terminal. Being able to install apps, games, and most importantly play within the terminal itself. If not, what's the point? Being inside or using Powershell (Linux) is like being in a different world.

I finally received my 2 in 1, Windows 10, Tablet PC. I must say, I'm pretty surprised at how smooth everything is. I only have the 2GB Ram and 64GB Rom for storage. It has Intel HD graphics and Atom processor Z3745D, 1.3 GHz, Quad-Core. Using the 32-bit operating system, x64 based processor.

I have the Acer Spin 1 with Intel N4200 and it sometimes stutters. I even upgrade it to an 8GB ram from the 4GB original. I end up only using it occasionally. I actually bought the tablet PC because I thought of installing Ubuntu on it.

Now, I'm actually using the Tablet PC to try and finish this blog post. I was doing it halfway on my PC yesterday but couldn't resist dabbling with the tablet. Spend the whole day and night updating, downloading, and even testing Diablo II on it.

Surprisingly, this Windows 10 tablet PC can actually play Diablo II. Yes, it's an old game. But, this tablet only has 2GB of ram. For Windows 10, I always thought you need a minimum of 8GB of ram. Like, I've said, my Acer spin 1 with N4200 will stutter sometimes.

One thing is that once in a while, the keyboard will type out gibberish. Although, I just need to un-dock and dock again for it to work properly again. I haven't got any problem with it right now. The keyboard needs a bit of use too. Feels, kinda small and cramp.

When I check the task manager, everything seems to be on low power usage. The memory is almost 90%. For low-end devices, I prefer using Firefox as it seems to work well. But, it sure does eats a lot of your memory. I also tried Samsung Dex with my Note 10+ and runs pretty smoothly too.

It's not all nice and dandy of course. Asphalt 9 Legends load pretty slow and kinda lag a bit. Still playable and the graphics aren't pretty. I love using the included stylus pen to play my favorite adult coloring game. Having a touchscreen also helps to easily and quickly resize certain tricky parts.

The tablet gets a bit heavy when holding for long period. You can play games with touchscreen or gyro control. Oh, I can't install WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux on this tablet PC as it doesn't meet the requirements. At least I can use Termux via Samsung Dex or Microsoft, Your Phone app.

I actually bought this because I like the keyboard design with the handle. Pretty nifty.

Sometimes, you'll have to dock and un-dock the keyboard as it goes weird halfway through typing. Maybe, the connector is loose or whatever.

Simple box design. And, it's a no-brand tablet PC from china. It cost me around US$100+.

The stylus is kinda heavy and there's a trick to using it. I kept pressing it like I would on a pen or pencil.

I can't use WSL but I can use Ubuntu that's installed on my Samsung Note 10+ wireless. Cool!

Lucky for me, this tablet PC can run Samsung Dex without any problem. That is useful for file transfer.

While typing this post, using the keyboard, it keeps coming out with gibberish. A bit of a hassle. When it works, it works well.

The good thing about a tablet PC is that you can use it as a tablet when you don't need a keyboard. Unlike a 2 in 1 laptop which is pretty heavy. One of the reasons I don't use my Acer Spin 1 laptop as a tablet. They'll get heavier the longer you hold them.

This tablet PC has its limitation, mostly specs-wise. But, as long as you use it within that limitation, this affordable device will serve you well. It really surprises me how it can cope as if it has the same specs as my other HP AMD Ryzen 7 laptop.

Last but not least, the battery can only last a couple of hours. Although, I feel it can last longer if I don't open up too many programs. Some of them running in the background. I also feel like this is meant for cheap alternatives Windows 10 laptops for students.

I'm not really into Windows 10 tablet pc. The reason, I'm looking at them now is because I'm thinking of installing Linux ubuntu over the Windows 10 OS. I already have an Intel Celeron N4200 laptop with the original 4GB of Ram which I immediately upgrade to 8GB.

I can tell you, even with 8GB of ram, the laptop still stutters once in a while. It can run the Diablo II though. I'm actually surprised that they're still selling a Windows 10 tablet with such specs. I guess, the low price is pretty tempting. That's why I thought, I'll get one and try installing Linux on it.

I don't know why a Linux laptop, pc, or tablet is not more commonly sold in this day and age. As a casual Linux user, I find it great for tinkering and learning. Even if you're not interested in tinkering, it's still good enough for your daily usage.

That's why my next project is to try to install Ubuntu on these kinds of Windows 10 tablet pc. They're pretty cheap and even with low-end specs, they're still great for simple tasks like checking emails, watching youtube, and maybe playing some old games.

I've owned a Windows 10 tablet a couple of years back, but I've kinda given it away. Now, I'm interested to try out Linux again on these kinds of tablets pc. I don't want just another Linux laptop, but being able to use it in both tablet and laptop form will be an added plus.

Frankly, I'm not even sure if I can install Linux on the tablet pc. I have an old ubuntu iso cd that I've used on several laptops decades ago. I'm planning to try to use it again to install ubuntu. If this doesn't work, I'll just use it with the original Windows 10.

I can now install WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10. So, in a way, I can still play with the Linux terminal. I already have my gaming PC and AMD Ryzen 7 HP laptop for my main work and usage. That's why I don't mind the low-end specs of the tablet pc. 

I don't want to fck-up my main computer and laptop. If you're wondering. That's another reason, why I decided to get a cheap tablet pc. Sometimes, I'll be installing and deleting some programs and it'll also eat up my main pc storage space. This way, I don't have to worry if anything happens.

Can't wait for my Windows 10 tablet Pc to arrive!

Play Command Line linux games with Powkiddy X18 controller

Like I've said before, one of the reasons I like the Powdiddy X18 or GPD XD Plus is because you can install the Termux app on it. Termux is a Linux terminal app for Android devices. It's not a full Linux O.S. but in spite of that, you can do quite a lot with it.

I'm no Linux expert but if you have used Linux distros, you basically know what it's all about. Now, you can already use WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux on a Microsoft Windows 10 pc. Termux is like the WSL of Android devices. In fact, with Andronix, I can even install Ubuntu 20 on my Powkiddy X18. Cool!

As with any Linux terminal, you can install stuff. Of course, I'm interested in games. So, I like to check out games that can be played on the terminal. One of the few games I like is ninvaders and nsnake. Which you can install by typing sudo apt install ninvaders or nsnake.

Once, installed, you can play by typing the name of the game on the terminal. Pretty nifty. The games are pretty basic and there's no music or sound effect. But, it's still fun to play. Especially, now that I found out, I can play with the integrated controller of the Powkiddy X18.

I prefer to install Ubuntu 20 and use it instead of Termux because I wanted the latest python 3. Which is also included. So, how cool is that to be able to code and mess around with Python on a portable gaming device such as the X18 and XD Plus?

In any case, I'm actually surprised that I can play this old command-line Linux game with a controller. The stupid thing is that not all Android games can be played with a controller. That's why I like playing retro games. They come with controller support and best of all you can play them offline without ads.

For small devices like this, I think an Android O.S. is good enough. They don't need lots of power like Microsoft Windows. Of course, the more powerful the CPU and GPU the better. Right now, you'll have a problem playing PUBG or COD mobile on the powkiddy X18.

For average users, Android is already good enough. You can surf the net, watch youtube, check emails, listen to music, and much more. And, you can even use it for school or work. Why do you need an expensive high-end Windows 10 laptop for all that?

For the budget-conscious, Android devices fit theirs needs. Unless, of course, if you want to play the latest triple-A games. You can't compare simple command-line Linux games to games like Cyberpunk 2077. But, I'll still love, if I can play that game on the go on a portable game device.

Maybe, I can play PC games by streaming them to my Powkiddy X18 or the GPD XD Plus. But, I prefer if I can install it directly to the portable game console, like the Nintendo Switch. Well, I can already play Crysis on it. Although, I still can't use it as a normal PC, yet.

One thing for sure, I'm going to look out for more fun Linux stuff to do on my Powkiddy X18 after this post.

The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is cool. It's a Linux terminal that you can use on the Windows system. If you're using Linux distros, you use the terminal. Like downloading stuff, SSH, or whatever. Pretty nifty and light without the Linux User interface.

Recently, I read about Termux, which is similar to WSL. Before this, I'd always wanted to install Linux on my tablet or old mobile phone. Termux is like using WSL, a Linux terminal, I installed it and it works like any other Linux terminal.

I love doing stuff on the Linux terminal. E.g. using nano to create little Python code and testing them out. Installing and playing old terminal games. No fancy graphics or sound effects. But, still fun and interesting to play.

You can do all that using the Termux, terminal on your phone. But some things can't be installed like 'boxes'. You can only install Python 2. Some games also can't be installed. So, it's not perfect. I hope they'll be available as it's updated further.

I love Samsung mobile phones because they have Samsung Dex. They also used to have Linux on Dex which they stopped supporting. It's a full desktop Linux user interface. I think if they had developed something like Termux it would have been better.

Linux on Dex could have been a game-changer. Finally, use your phone as a dual Android and Linux computer. No other company is doing that and it could boost their mobile section. For whatever reason, they didn't think it was worth the money and effort.

Well, with Termux, I can still play with Linux and the best thing it's available anytime and anywhere on my mobile phone. I can link my phone to a portable monitor for a bigger screen, adding a mouse and keyboard, voila! 

I love termux so much that I'm dabbling with it before I sleep. I wish some of my favorite terminal programs could be installed. It's better than nothing. After I've posted this article, I want to try SSH on my Raspberry Pi robot car. This is going to be fun!

Oh, by the way, I love the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. You can fold and rest it on a table like a laptop. Imagine opening the Termux app, and using the bottom half of the phone as a touchscreen keyboard. This could be the new mobile computing phone.

I like the fact that you can fold it and then put it inside your pocket. You can open it up and use it as a tablet. Put it on the table, take out your portable keyboard and mouse and you can do your work or even note-taking in class.

Portability is important nowadays. Instead of carrying a laptop or tablet to work or school, just bring a mobile computing device like the Z Fold 2. Take pictures or videos for your project, edit them on the go, upload them to YouTube, and share them with your colleagues or classmates!

Now, if only I don't have to sell my soul to pay for this thing. :p

I've been dabbling, playing around with Python and WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux using a separate editor. But, yesterday, watching a video on learning python, it was recommended to download and use Microsoft Visual Studio Code.

Recently, I saw a youtube video showing that now, you can use WSL right from inside the Visual Studio. I was intrigued. That's part of the reason I wanted to download and install the Visual Studio code. Seems like will be something new for me to learn.

For me, this is something new to try and play with. Installation was pretty fast and easy. Once, I installed the Visual Studio code, it immediately asked me if I wanted to add the WSL since I already have it. That's really helpful right from the start.

Of course, the first thing I tried was trying some simple python, "Hello World" code. But, first, it installed and add python for me. You can practically install and use anything from inside the visual studio code. This is a pretty powerful editor.

This is funny but after a while doing some python stuff, I go to the terminal and instinctively type, wsl. And, immediately I was brought to the windows subsystem for the Linux command line. I was like, oh ok, that's how I can go to Linux.

It was actually cool to be able to use wsl right from inside the virtual studio code. This way, I can do python stuff, run it, debugs, or whatever and then can just go to Linux terminal and try it there too. You can also do other usual Linux stuff like update and upgrade.

I didn't show it in the youtube demo video I uploaded but you can also play Linux command line games too. Being able to learn coding in python and at the same time using Linux from right inside the Microsoft editor is really useful for me.

Yeah, I'll still just use the wsl or python thonny editor separately for trying out or checking quick stuff. If I'm really getting into it, I'll then open up the visual studio code. The studio code is not just for python. If you're working on other stuff like Ruby, C#, or whatever, they have it all!

I'm actually also learning coding with SmileBASIC 4 (website) and FUZE 4 (website) on my Nintendo switch lite. It's almost like python. Just the coding and keywords are different. There was a game that also includes a Ruby editor. But, Nintendo discovers it and the game dev had to delete it.

It will actually be fun to be able to use the Ruby editor on my switch lite. It's so powerful that even Nintendo banning the game. That's really a bummer. It would have been a good way for people to learn about coding with Ruby. Money is not everything, Nintendo!

I've always found it interesting playing a textbase RPG game. I didn't really like them back then. But, after I played a terminal quest game available on Kano OS where you learn about Linux command through a textbase RPG game, I was pretty much hooked. In fact, I actually eagerly finished the game. Which I seldom do!

Since then, I've been looking for similar games. Especially, where you can learn about coding and play at the same time. There aren't really many such games available. Right now, I'm more interested to find terminal games because of the Ubuntu terminal. Powerful Linux terminal is now available on Windows 10 via WSL aka Windows Subsystem for Linux. Which is pretty cool!

Yeah, when everyone else is pumped up for triple AAA games like the Ghost of Tsushima, I'm more interested in finding an old terminal command-line game. In a way, I'm coming back to where gaming starts. It's not all about how beautiful the graphics are.

Of course, a game will enhance the gamer experience with beautiful landscape graphics, scary-looking monsters, and beautiful princesses to save but, if the story sucks, the game sucks. Especially with eSports, where it's all about grinding results against the competition.

That doesn't mean I don't like them though, I'll play the game once in a while. That's why I have an Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, and other retro gaming devices. I even have a gaming pc. I spend most of my time on Pc so, obviously, I check out more games for it.

Like I said, WSL has really made me more interested in dabbling with Linux. And, looking around for anything that has got to do with the terminal. While looking I found a few gems, and one of them although got nothing to do with the terminal is the terminal quest by zoglu.net.

Yesterday, I used my 11-inch laptop on my bed and I kept thinking, it would be nicer if I have a smaller laptop. Which would be much more portable and lighter. That's part of the reason I love my Nintendo Switch lite. The problem is, it's a gaming console and not a computer.

There are already a few good mini laptops available. My only worry is that it's not powerful enough. Even my low-end Pentium N4200 with Windows 10 sometimes lags. I like to use it to mirror my Samsung Note 10+ to my laptop with Microsoft 'Your Phone' app or Samsung Dex.

Now with WSL, it's also becoming my learning tool to play with Linux. I'm really enjoying playing with all these latest features. That's why having a portable, lighter, smaller laptop is important for me. But the tech still can't catch up with my demands.  

Well, who knows, I might get my wish. An all-in-one cool, sleek design powerful Windows gaming/working portable laptop that is 7-9 inches small that can even fit into my side pocket. With the latest 5G tech. Way cool!
