Hey guys,

Check it out!

I've been dabbling with a SmileBASIC 4 ( eShop link) educational coding program these past few days again. And, decide to do a demo princess story with the knowledge I've gained. Well, I already managed to create my own retro music player which plays a playlist of the retro background music available.

If only we were allowed the ability to access our own songs from the MicroSD card, that will be way cool. Imagine, listening to your favorite music with the player you coded yourself. Won't that be awesome?

SmileBASIC 4 allows you, well, you have to pay for server tickets to be able to upload and share your own coded program. I haven't tried that yet. But, you can download other sample works and even play around with the code.

The basic is pretty simple. But, it gets harder when you want to do other things. What makes it worse is that unlike, let's say, python (main website), there is a lot of sample and tutorial you can search online. Even then, sometime, it'll work, sometime it won't.

For example, the python snake.py sample I copied using nano editor now doesn't work after I tried editing with the windows IDE version. It kept giving me a hint about indent. I tried deleting and re-writing the code. But, it still won't work. I'll try it again later. That's part of the learning curve, I guess.

One thing I like is that, even though the programming language is different (I wish it was), as long as you learn how it all works, no matter what program you learn, it'll be still useful. FUZE 4 (eShop links) is also another programming software that you can get from eShop. It's something like smilebasic 4. And, the language is different. So, different, I had to relearn, the basic command of that program.

Learning several programming languages is like learning Japanese, but then you're in France, and you had to learn the France language. If you travel to Germany, obviously, it'll be good to learn some basic words like 'help'. I actually googled it and found the german word for help is Hilfe.

Well, the most important thing is, it's something I love learning and doing. And, I find it such a cool way to learn on my switch lite. I would actually spend the whole night in bed, creating or figuring out a command or what works.

One thing to note is that, if you're thinking of getting the switch to play with SmileBASIC 4 or FUZE 4, you might want to buy a Nintendo Switch instead of a switch lite. You can dock your Nintendo switch to a bigger screen tv or monitor. While you can't do that with the lite.

Since I've already sold my Nintendo switch to get the switch lite, I guess, I'll have to contend with the small screen of the lite. You still can easily connect your mouse and keyboard via a USB c dongle to both of them.

In spite of not being able to dock my switch lite to a bigger screen, I don't really find it a problem. The on-screen keyboard and controller isn't that bad. For quick editing, or when you got an instant idea, you can just go straight into the program and start doing.

That's what so good about the switch lite. It's such a great portable gaming and learning console. Learning institutions should really make use of this opportunity. They can work out with Nintendo and get the switch for classes or for the kids.

If they're going to make a hacker movie, they might want to use the Nintendo Switch as the main star. The Nintendo Switch has already been hacked. So, you can basically do anything with it. What if you can link it to the main computer and start doing err..stuff?

You build a robot and control it with your Nintendo switch. Now, that's a good product idea. Instead of the paper Nintendo Labo. Gaming is a great way to attract kids to learning programming. Couple with the portability of the Nintendo switch. One day, you'll be asking your kids what they're doing and they'll say, oh nothing. Just hacking the Mars rovers on my switch!

By the way, click here to check out my SCRATCH page for some playable games I created using the programming language.
