Hey guys,

Check it out!

So, late yesterday night, my ex-colleague Whatsapp me, requesting advice on getting a new laptop. I thought he was joking at first as he's asked me before about re-selling my laptops to him. He already has a budget and brand in mind but not sure about the specs.

I asked him a couple of questions like does he likes to game, and what's the main purpose of the laptop. He says, he's not interested in gaming and anyway, good gaming laptops are way over his budget. He showed me a Dell laptop that he was currently looking at.

I told him I got my HP laptop with AMD Ryzen 7, Radeon Vega 10 mobile graphics, 8GB ram, webcam, fingerprint sensor, and 512GB SSD. All within the price of USD$670+. Which was coincidentally on a special sale price. I had to wait for the actual sale day to purchase it.

Of course, the price went up to around $800 after that. Last I checked, it was sold out. If my friend had asked me and the offer is still on, I would have recommended him that. The problem with getting a laptop you really want is that the specs and design vary between them.

The Dell laptop that my friend showed me he's looking at only has 14". I told him to get the 15.6" instead for better viewing pleasure. I'm wearing specs, I find the 15" screen is much better for my eyes. Also, it meant I would have a full keyboard with number pads.

After looking around some of the laptops, I found a Dell laptop that suits his budget and usage. It's 15.6 inches, has a webcam (assuming by the pictures), 512GB SSD, i5-1135G7 (supposedly better than i7-1165G7), MX330 Graphics, Windows 10 Pro, and 3 Year Warranty. Price of around USD$905.

The good thing is that the laptop already has 16GB ram, so he doesn't have to think about upgrading. He did say wanted more storage but I told him, why wouldn't 512GB be enough? Unless he's gaming, take a lot of videos and pictures. Anyway, it's much better to back up to an external drive.

I told him the MX330 would at least allow him to play some games on low-medium. Although he insists he's not gonna game. I replied even then, it might help if he's doing video editing. For example, my gaming desktop with GTX 1060 3GB and 16GB ram does makes my video editing smooth and doesn't lag.

I remember using my old Pentium pc to do video editing back in the days and it used to crash a lot. Sometimes, Microsoft Movie Maker software won't even start. Even my HP laptop had a bit of a problem when I wanted to edit video gameplay. That's why I'm thinking of upgrading from the 8GB of stock rams.

The important thing is that it fits within his budget and the laptop could last him for about 5-10 years, maybe. My Acer Spin Pentium N4200 that I bought around March 2017 is still in pretty good shape. I can even play some old games like Diablo II. Although, I had to upgrade the ram from 4 to 8GB.

It does lag once in a while. That's why I'm not using it for heavy stuff like video editing. I mostly use it for retro gaming, backing up important files, and of course for entertainment like youtube. It's actually a 2-in-1 laptop but it's too heavy to be used as a tablet. That's why I prefer a detachable keyboard laptop.

Anyway, pretty much left it up to my bro now. Lol.
