Celebrating My Birthday in JB: Thai Flavors, Sweaty Moments & Kodak FZ55 Fun

This year, I decided to make my birthday a little different. Instead of the usual stay-at-home celebration, I crossed the border to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, for a brunch adventure with my family. My nephew had been raving about a place called Kampung Carabao, a Thai-style restaurant famous for its rich flavors and spicy dishes.

Kampung Carabao: A Spicy Birthday Brunch

The moment we stepped in, the restaurant’s warm wooden décor and Thai-inspired atmosphere set the mood for a cozy brunch. The menu was loaded with classic Thai favorites—Tom Yum soups, green curries, and spicy stir-fries.

I’m not great with too hot spice, but I wanted to try it. Within minutes, I was sweating profusely. The heat wasn’t just from the Malaysian weather—it was from the food! Thankfully, I paired my meal with hot tea, and to my surprise, I didn’t have any stomach issues the next day. The tea really could be the secret weapon against spice overload.

Capturing the Day with the Kodak PIXPRO FZ55

Since it was a special day, I brought along my trusty Kodak PIXPRO FZ55. I’ve had bigger, more powerful cameras like my Nikon P950, Zfc, and Z8, but sometimes it’s fun to just carry something light and easy.

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 Key Specs:

  • 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor

  • 28mm wide-angle lens with 5× optical zoom

  • 2.7" LCD display

  • 1080p Full HD video recording

  • Slim, lightweight design under $200

  • Rechargeable Li-ion battery

  • Digital image stabilization

I kept it mostly in auto mode, but I tried some of the scene modes, and they worked surprisingly well. One thing I noticed: the camera has a stabilization option in the menu, but you still need to keep your hands very steady—especially when shooting video. For best results, recommend resting it on a stable platform.

You can watch a video from this trip on my YouTube channel.

Shopping and a Smooth Ride Home

After brunch, we headed to our usual shopping center. I treated myself to a simple messenger bag—a little birthday gift. Luckily, there was no traffic jam at Singapore customs, and we made it home by 8 PM.

To wrap up the day, I bought a small cake and had a quiet moment. It wasn’t a grand celebration, but it was filled with family, laughter, good food, and a chance to play with my camera.

Final Thoughts

The Kodak FZ55 might not match the power of my Nikons, but for a fun day out, it’s more than enough. It's really a great budget travel photography and videography camera. This trip reminded me that birthdays don’t have to be extravagant—sometimes, all you need is good company, delicious food, and a little gadget to capture the memories.

Happy Birthday to me!

Happy birthday to meee ..happy birthday to meee ..happy birthday to meee meeeeeee ! Happy birthday to meeeeee !!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee .... why de heck i'm so happy about? I'm just a step closer to my grave ... haha ..

Well, well. 36 years of ups and down. Yeah, never thought, I'll still be alive right now. So much had and is happening right now. Not, just my world but the world around me. Such is life. It ain't over till it's over. So, I received a birthday card from one of my friend enjoying himself in London. I wonder if he's reading my blog right now. Anyway, he told me soon I'll be 40 so like they say 40 is the age that could truly change your life. And, it's up to you where your direction would be for maybe the next 25 years or so.

It makes me think. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that there's nothing really for me to change the way I am. Cause, I've been true to myself all through this years. I might have change a bit but that's kind of normal. Everyone, change through the years. Maybe, a little more experience and more down to earth. Because, we have seen the world. We know what the world can do to a man. It hasn't really change. I haven't really change. I'm still the old me and in the next 4 years when I'll be turning 40, I'll still be the same. I won't change. I've got nothing to change. I like the way things are right now. In fact, this couple of years, things have been a little quiet. There's nothing really for me to look forward to and there's nowhere that I wanted to go to. So, I'm just hanging it there right now. Just, minding my own business.

Yeah, that's me. Although, been a bit kind of boring with life right now. But, as I say, the more I think about it. There's nothing really that surprises me anymore. Man, are the same since the day we started walking on this earth and they won't change. There still will be wars. People fighting each other for land, oil, power, money or whatever. That's their life. That's the kind of life they want to live in.

For me? I'm just a plain simple man. Just minding my own business. Just doing the mundane things everyday. Working to put food on the table. Yeah, I won't trade anything for this simple life. It's too precious for me. Freedom. Yeah, that's what I have right now. I don't really have anything to worry much.

Well, anyway, it's kind of late and I'm kind of sleepy. Tomorrow or rather today is a new day for me. Ha ha. Hope, things won't change. I just want to be and stay happy.

Peace .. out!

P.S. Nothin lust forever eh?

P.P.S Oh yeah, before I forget. My country is also celebrating it's national day today. haha! Have fun watching the fireworks today!

I'll be ... next thursday!

Yup, I'll be ... next Thursday!

If you 're wondering. I'm talking about my birthday. And the best part is the whole country is celebrating with me too!

Why? Because, it will be 9th of Aug this coming Thursday. It's also my country independence day. Cool right?

If I may quote from senior minister Lee Kuan Yew, "Merdeka! Merdeka! Lagi sekali tuan-tuan dan puan-puan. Merdeka! Merdeka!"

If you're wondering what de heck I just type. It's in my native language which means, "Freedom! Freedom! Once more, ladies and gentleman. Freedom! Freedom!"

Kind to think of it. I'm happy with my Freedom. I can't say bout the other country. But, I'm glad I'm living safe and sound in Singapore. A lot of people, be it Singaporean or Non-Singaporean like to complain about the government this and that. But, why?

Just look at some other countries which have corrupt officials. Just look at the state their country are in. If you want to compare it with them, we are miles apart. Okay, I know our government could be too rigid. But, you know its for your own good. Our government is like a father watching over our every move with a cane in his hand. He'll only use it if you did bad thing. Sometime, a little control won't hurt. A little give and take. A little sacrifice will go a long way.

Sometime, I don't understand why some people would like to rock the boat we are in right now. Because, of a few discerning voice. People want too much of everything. They are not always satisfied with what they have. They are not giving thanks enough for what they are given.

Life, aren't certainly perfect. Just take what you have. Don't be too greedy and learn to share. If the whole world learn to give and take, and be satisfied even though it's little. It's not the end of the world. Yeah, some may have more then us. But, as long as we are happy. If we have more, we might want to share. If we have less, we could still share. Life on earth ain't heaven. It's never going to be enough. If you want more then heaven above is waiting. There's more for everyone. There's enough for everyone. Take what you want. Eat what you want. Drink as much as you want. Enjoy yourself. That's your present for believing in HIM. That's why it's called heaven. Nothing, in life right now is comparable to heaven. If someone said so to you then they're lying. Just tell them, "You ain't seen nothin yet!"

With that, see you on the other side...
