When you’re out shooting in unpredictable weather, protecting your gear is just as important as capturing the perfect shot. The Nikon Coolpix P950, with its powerful 83x optical zoom lens, is a dream for wildlife photographers, bird watchers, and travel enthusiasts. With a lens that long, finding the right waterproof DSLR camera rain cover becomes a must.

Whether you’re using a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens, a good rain cover for DSLR cameras keeps your setup safe from rain, snow, dust, and even accidental splashes. Let’s dive into why a camera rain cover is essential and what to look for if you own a Nikon Coolpix P950 or similar long-zoom cameras.

Why You Need a Waterproof Camera Rain Cover

Professional and enthusiast photographers often find themselves shooting outdoors, where weather conditions can change rapidly. A sudden downpour can not only ruin your photos but also damage your camera’s electronics and lens mechanisms.

  • Waterproof protection – Prevents moisture from seeping into delicate camera parts.

  • Dust and sand protection – Ideal for safaris, deserts, and windy coastal shoots.

  • Extended lens coverage – Essential for long zoom cameras like the Nikon P950 or P1000.

  • Affordable insurance – Much cheaper than repairing or replacing gear.

Best Rain Covers for DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras with Long Lenses

When choosing a camera rain cover, opt for one specifically designed for telephoto lenses and superzooms. The Nikon P950’s long zoom demands extra coverage compared to standard kit lenses.

Here are a few highly recommended options: (Open in a new tab.)

  1. Altura Photo Professional Rain Cover for DSLR & Mirrorless

    • Fits long telephoto lenses up to 18” (perfect for Nikon P950’s extended zoom).

    • Clear window for viewing your LCD screen.

    • Easy hand access for controls.

  2. Movo CRC300 Clear Rain Cover

    • Designed for cameras with large zoom lenses.

    • Transparent design so you can still see controls.

    • Lightweight and packable.

  3. Vortex Storm Jacket Rain Cover

    • Durable neoprene material.

    • Elastic drawstring for snug fit around lens hoods.

    • Trusted by outdoor and wildlife photographers.

Using a Rain Cover with Nikon Coolpix P950

Since the Nikon Coolpix P950 is not fully weather-sealed, a waterproof camera rain cover is highly recommended for outdoor shooting. Its superzoom lens extends far beyond the body, which means it’s more vulnerable to moisture.

Final Thoughts

If you own a Nikon Coolpix P950 or any DSLR/mirrorless camera with a long lens, a waterproof rain cover is not optional—it’s essential. Protecting your camera ensures you never miss a shot, whether you’re capturing birds in the rainforest, a landscape in the mist, or street photography in the rain.

A small investment in a camera rain cover for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras will give you peace of mind and extend the life of your photography gear.

Nikon Coolpix P950 - waterproof DSLR camera rain cover

Professional Waterproof DSLR Camera Rain Cover for Digital SLR Cameras, Nikon/Canon/Sony and etc

Hey guys,

Check it out!

Well, I finally got the waterproof DSLR camera rain cover for my Nikon Coolpix P950. I kinda did an unboxing video of it and you can watch it here. The first thing that came to my mind was, this is actually bigger than what's shown in the picture.

I was afraid, it'll be too small as the P950 isn't a small camera. It also didn't specifically say for the Nikon Coolpix P950, P900, or P1000. Turn out it's big enough to cover the whole camera. It's also easy to zoom in and out but you need to use the lash provided to hold the cover in place.

I like how you can slide your hands in from either left or right side of the camera to access it. There's a big rectangular transparent cover so you can see the LCD screen. The materials look and feel like a raincoat. I didn't do any water test on it.

It's a bit of a hassle to put the camera into the cover but, I guess you'll get used to it over time. Once you put the camera in, you can zip it up. So, the only way, you can access is through the sides. It looks safe but, I don't think I'll be using it under heavy rain.

I decided to get a camera rain waterproof cover for my camera after using it last Sunday at the beach in light drizzling rain. Like, I've said, I just got this camera and the first time using it. I remembered the P950 isn't waterproof and even in light drizzling, rainwater can still enter it.

I was taking shelter under a tree that looks like a good cover from the rain and while taking pictures and videos a single splash of rainwater drop right on top of my camera. Luckily, it didn't drop to the mic open holes. I immediately pack up and move on to other places.

I didn't think of bringing along any type of cover for the cover as I was hoping the rain will stop by the time I reach the beach. But, the damn rain didn't stop. I miss some good photo opportunities because of the rain. Mind you, it wasn't even heavy rain.

I didn't even know if there's actually any kind of waterproof cover for the camera. It's only when I did some search that I discover there actually is. In fact, there are many different types available. The price also varies. As I'm on a budget, I got the cheapest I could find. Hehe!

I also got myself a waterproof camera backpack from Caden. I like the design with the slot at the side where you can easily and quickly access your camera. I'm just using a point-and-shoot camera, so I don't need bags with lots of space and dividers for the camera lens.

I like that it also has a laptop compartment. If you travel, you'll need your laptop to edit videos and pictures before uploading them online to your social media. I got the 14" size bag but my 15.6" HP laptop can fit in too. Although, a little tight.

Looking at the camera waterproof rain cover reminds me that I might want to get myself a raincoat too. I'm actually planning to go out later to take some photos at a botanic garden. The problem is, it's raining season and it's still kinda moody grey. Come back later, I might post new pics and videos!
