Ubuntu Mate for Raspberry Pi 3

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter MAX Kit - 64GB Edition

Hey guys,

Check out my video on Ubuntu MATE for Raspberry pi 3!

I was actually looking around for ways to install RetroArch on my tablet. But, I can't seem to do it while using Kano OS. So, when I found ubuntu mate, I decided to try it. It got a raspberry pi 3 version and I really like how nice it looks, compared to the mundane Raspbian.

It's pretty easy to install the ubuntu mate. The procedure is the same as installing Raspbian by using the etcher software. Once, it's done writing on your microSD card, just insert it on your raspberry pi and let it load.

Installations, and booting up for the first time on the pi is really time-consuming though. But, once everything is done, you can start to tour the OS. It's really very accomplished looking and you can also set to your own preferences.

Just a note if you're installing it on a tablet-like mine, you'll need to config the touchscreen LCD display. It seems there's some touchscreen hardware problem thingy. The screen is upside down. All that means is that the power and HDMI sit at the bottom and it will fall over.

There's a way to solve it by going to the terminal:

1. Type "sudo nano /boot/config.txt"
2. Add the line "lcd_rotate=2" to the top of the file.
3. Press CTRL+X
4. Then Y
5. Then Enter.
6. Reboot!

The screen will flip to the correct way up, again.

Anyway, with ubuntu mate, I just need to follow the instructions to install RetroArch for my raspberry pi here.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libretro/stable && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install retroarch

It didn't work while I was using Kano OS. That's one of the reasons that I decided to install ubuntu mate. While using Kano OS, I did try using higan by, sudo apt-get install higan,  but somehow the game was lagging and unplayable. I'm not sure why. I had to set the video to 'SDL' to at least able to load the game.

I've already got another dedicated set with Recalbox for my Tv. I'm glad that now, I can play my favorite retro games using retroarch on my raspberry pi 3 tablet. While at the same time, able to play around with Linux.

But, now, I've got another problem to solve. Using, ubuntu mate, Kodi doesn't work!

I'm still looking around for ways to get Kodi to work. That's part of the problem with Linux's various distro. There's always something that's not working. I guess that's how you learn. Frankly, it really reminds me of the old days of learning windows pc and using Linux for the first time.

It could be a hair-pulling, frustrating and chaotic experience to try out things and finding solutions to get things to work in Linux. But, that's also part of the charm. When you finally discover ways to solve the problem, it's like eureka!

Click here to read through my old blog post on which I bought and also the time played around with earlier versions of ubuntu.

That's why I love raspberry pi 3!
