DJI Ronin RS3 Mini Review: My First Gimbal Experience for Smoother Cinematic Videos

(All links will open up in a new tab.)

If you're into video creation and struggle with handheld stability like I do, getting a gimbal might be the game-changer you need. I recently picked up the DJI Ronin RS3 Mini, my first gimbal, and I’m already seeing how it could improve the look and feel of my videos. Here’s my experience so far—along with some specs, first impressions, and thoughts on how it might help other beginner filmmakers, too.

DJI Ronin RS3 Mini Key Specs

  • Weight (without camera): 795g (1.75 lbs)

  • Payload Capacity: Up to 2 kg (4.4 lbs)

  • Battery Life: Up to 10 hours

  • Charging Time: Approx. 2.5 hours (USB-C)

  • Screen: 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen

  • Controls: Bluetooth shutter control, joystick, swipe gestures

  • Compatibility: Works with a wide range of mirrorless cameras (Nikon, Sony, Canon, etc.)

First Impressions: Lightweight but Heavier With Gear

The RS3 Mini feels impressively compact and lightweight. It’s clearly designed with portability in mind. Once I mounted my Nikon Z8 and a lens, it became heavier. It’s still portable, just not as feather-light as the gimbal alone.

Setup Experience: Challenging at First, Easier With Practice

Balancing the three axes for the first time was a challenge. I watched several YouTube tutorials on how to do it properly. Once I got the hang of it, the process became much easier.

The best part? If you don’t switch out your camera or lens often, you only balance it once. That’s a huge time-saver when you're shooting with the same setup.

Controls and Features That Make Life Easier

The thumb joystick makes it easy to control camera movement smoothly, and the touchscreen menu is intuitive and responsive. You can navigate the settings quickly using simple swipe gestures.

The RS3 Mini also offers auto-calibration of the gimbal to your camera's weight and balance. It helps ensure smooth performance and reduces vibrations right before a shoot.

Why I Bought the RS3 Mini

I’m not good at handheld shooting, especially when taking steady panning shots. I wanted something that could give my videos a more cinematic, stable look, and a gimbal was the obvious solution.

Even without any added accessories like the sling handle grip (which isn't cheap), I’m already happy with how the RS3 Mini performs. I’m also watching a lot of gimbal tutorials on YouTube to learn new techniques and improve my shooting skills.

Looking Forward to Shooting More

So far, I haven’t had the chance to do a full shoot with the gimbal, but I’m excited to try it out properly. It’ll make a big difference, especially for panning, motion tracking, and any shot where stability is key.

Whether filming with my Nikon, GoPro, or Insta360, I expect the RS3 Mini to add a new level of polish to my videos. I love making videos, and this tool opens up more creative possibilities.

A Final Thought: Why No Practical Gimbal Backpacks?

Oh, one last thing.

Why aren’t there any gimbal backpacks that let you store your full setup with the camera still mounted? Disassembling the rig when you want to move to a new location is a hassle. Most gimbal bags only have compartments for the gimbal alone—no space for a mounted camera.

It would be great if someone designed a smarter, more practical backpack for filmmakers that allows quick and easy access without constantly breaking down your setup.

Thanks for reading! If you’re just getting into gimbals or content creation, the DJI RS3 Mini is a solid starting point. It’s portable, powerful, and user-friendly—exactly what a beginner needs to elevate their video work.
